Mercury - Seeing-Eye Cat!

Mom here -

I usually leave this blog alone, as Venus and Mercury are more than capable of managing things themselves. We have not posted in a while, because my digital camera died, and I just got a new one the other day.

But I had to tell you about Mercury.

Our dog is blind. Her name is Nadine and she is part Springer and part Border Collie. She's always been a spunky, active dog, but now that she can't see, she's slowed down a lot, because she's afraid of bumping into things. When we first got V&M, she thought he was a mouse because of his gray color (she could still see then) and chased him, so it took him a little while to warm up to her.

Well, as you may know, Mercury likes to sneak out whenever he can. Even though we try our best, with 3 kids and their friends the doors aren't always closed. This morning, he got out again. My husband came in later in the morning with an amazing story.

Nadine was out in the back yard, and she was lost. She was out by our little studio and couldn't find her way back to the back porch. Apparently Mercury saw her, and went over to her and started nudging her in the direction of the back porch! My husband said that he walked beside her and nudged her along the whole way, until he guided her up the back stairs and onto the porch.

And he did it again this afternoon when Sam, my 13-year-old, saw him do it.

I'll see if I can get it on camera some time.

Who knew beneath that granite exterior was a Boy Scout of a cat?

That is such an amazing story. How nice that Mercury was helping Nadine. It's true, the animals can tell what needs to be done as far as their animal friends. Both cats and dogs have done amazing things. Mom used to get the magazine "Cat Fancy" and read about a cat that saved her parents from a fire. We always keep an eye out if anything needs being done. We've tried to keep her spirits up and keep her in good cheer. Of course, it doesn't always work. Meow Mew Meao

Sorry about Nadine! What happened to her?

Lots of scritches to RN Mercury!

We don't know what happened. She's eleven, and I guess that happens sometimes when dogs get older. I'm just amazed that the cats somehow know she can't see, and meow at her to get her attention. But they adore her and have taken her under their protection. Venus will meow at her and then roll over on her back in front of her (not that she can see it!). If Mercury hears her whimpering anywhere in the house, he goes over to check on her and see what's wrong. I always knew these cats were special, but I didn't know how special until now.

V & M are truly awesome. All I can do is tip my hat to them and send them some Internet-fishies and tuna rolls:

    @@@@@ o---<< 0--< (---<< @@@@@

and a bone for Nadine: 8===8

P.s. I'm sorry for the headless fishies:
the heads were angled brackets, and were
interpreted as HTML code by some clever piece of software. So they had to be beheaded :-(

    Venus, Mercury, and their Mom:

What fun...I have read a lot of blogs, but found yours this morning through a comment Mom left on a blog I read daily.

I look forward to visiting again. We have three cats and a dog at our home.

How nice to hear that you are doing random acts of kindness, even for canines.

Google 'libby and cashew' to find a cute story about a seeing eye cat called libby who helps a dog called cashew (i think it may have appeared in readers digest at some time).
